This course will treat the history and society of the Maghrib both as a coherent region and as a facet of larger Arab-Islamic, Mediterranean, and African “civilizations.” Some of the themes we will cover include French, Spanish, and Italian colonialism; the Algerian War of Independence; North African Islam; Berber identity and activism; trans-Saharan connections; gender and sexuality; Cold War politics; Maghribi immigration to Europe; Islamist terrorism; and post-independence state/society relations, including the transformative effects of the “Arab Spring.
