This course examines the politics and economics of late development in China and India. As we shall see, the fact that China emerged from World War II as a communist country and India as a democratic country had important implications for the types of economic strategies each country pursued. We will compare the historical contexts that shaped their political systems, as well as the consequences for their paths of late industrialization. We will also explore the role each country is playing in the global economy today. Prior knowledge of China and India are not required for this course.
